In PennCAN’s latest report – PA Pension Benefits Don’t Add-Up For Teachers And Taxpayers – we took an in-depth look at how the rising cost of pension obligations has forced school districts to make tough budgetary decisions that often result in fewer dollars going into educational programs and services.
We also examined just how beneficial PA’s pension benefits actually are for today’s teachers. As it turns out, the majority of educators don’t stay in the profession or the state long enough to take full advantage of their retirement benefits. Today’s teachers would do better off with a retirement plan that is flexible and portable.
PA’s teachers deserve retirement security and students deserve adequately funded public schools. It is increasingly clear that neither of these goals can be achieved unless significant changes are made to PA’s public pension system.
