HARRISBURG – Moments ago, Governor Wolf vetoed HB 805 (The Protect Excellent Teachers Act) despite the outpouring of support for this commonsense bill to permit school boards to make furlough decisions based on merit and not based solely on a teacher’s years of service. Below is a statement from Jonathan Cetel regarding the veto:

“Though Governor Wolf’s veto of HB805 comes as no surprise, it is nonetheless troubling that he has chosen to put special interests ahead of the interest of students and families.  By vetoing a bi-partisan bill, supported by nearly every education organization, Governor Wolf has demonstrated that his vision for public education is strong on funding but weak on meaningful reforms.  We applaud House and Senate leaders for their leadership in passing this bill and their commitment to ensuring The Protect Excellent Teachers Act is part of the 2016-17 budget negotiations.”
